STORIES FROM THE GENOME

USA 12:00 MIXED
DIR Rachel Mayeri
The cloudy future of our genetic understanding and the suspected map of human history contained inside the smallest piece of every one of us is on display in a collection of ideas ranging from Nature vs. Nurture to cloning to psychoanalysis to the homunculus theory to Mortal Kombat to the semi-conscious act of sexual selection. Mayeri's video is a formalist free-for-all that humorously takes it all into account and simultaneously leaves it all up for debate. -- Sean Gallagher

THE_FUTURE_OF _HUMAN_CONTAINMENT

AUSTRIA 5:00 VIDEO
DIR Michaela Schwentner MUS Pure
A black smear assumes the fragile shape of a crouched figure momentarily. The end result is as clear as it is horrifying. -- David Nolen

NINA

THE NETHERLANDS 7:30 VIDEO
DIR Jeroen Kooijmans, Roy Cerpac
"Jesus went out of doors that day and sat by the sea." (Matthew: 13) Motion snapshots of a Dutch water world unreel like selected details of a lost Breugel. But it's the brisk, sad, yet spirited movement of the boats in and out of frame that leads us to imagine waving or just sighing. -- Steve Ausbury

CHRISTMAS 1990

USA 3:00 VIDEO
DIR Jenny Stark
"Happiness isn't: the football pulled away as you kick. The kite-eating tree. The realization that even your dog has gone commercial" "Stop that sulking, you blockhead! Don't you know it hurts the troops? 5 cents please." "Oh brother!" -- Spencer Parsons

SPLINTERS

USA 8:30 VIDEO
DIR Luis Recoder
Recoder evokes a sinuous continuity of motion in staccato time. The segmented lines occasionally swarm densely to fill the darkness with eerie, summer evening light. -- David Nolen

WE CANNOT EXHIBIT IT

FRANCE 6:04 VIDEO
DIR Pierre Yves Clouin
Clouin's fairytale fantasy that fuses the torso of a Russian powerlifter to a silent film adaptation of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. "It is indecent!" -- Jason Cortlund
