For more than two decades, Pope.L has been making concept-based performance, drawings, lectures, mail art, and installations that decode and reconfigure the contradictions of black masculine identity in America. Such works are not unknown to controversy. Early in 2002, a touring retrospective exhibition of his work made headlines when an NEA grant that had been approved by a advisory review committee was rejected by the agency¹s chair, Richard Martin, rekindling the issue of US government censorship in the arts. In "Sum" Pope.L, one of the most inventive and challenging artists working today, will wander through the streets of Austin, TX from early evening into the night with a self-powered neon sign that spells out the word: "Coon."
