In a study of the moving image through its mechanical origins, Barna Kantor's latest works resonate like relics of a pre-cinematic age. In his own words: He embeds a contemporary, primitive media image into a three-dimensional device, which splits the work into two functionally interdependent components -- a hardware and a software. The software is the content while the hardware is the apparatus that delivers the content. In this way, the experience of the spectator is distilled into a one-on-one active relationship with the art rather than a passive viewing experience (as in cinema). Kantor's devices invite interaction- -- without which they cannot reveal their content.
