In May of 1995, Shawn Nelson an unemployed plumber, methamphetamine user and army veteran stole a tank from a San Diego armory and for twenty-three precious minutes drove it ripshod over the suburban terrain of Claremont, California. He eventually stalled on a highway divider. San Diego police broke open his escape hatch and shot him to death. No one else was hurt. But that’s only where the story begins and ends. Cul de Sac is an acute portrait of the culture of paranoia bred by the drug-military-industrial complex in “America’s Finest City.” Shawn Nelson was really only a memorable bit player - S.A.
