From the dawning of film history in 1900 until 1990, the Berlin Charitè Hospital made approximately 1,000 scientific films on topics ranging from shot wounds to the eye to hormonally conditioned homosexuality, from computer tomography to crudely performed leg amputations at the turn of the century. But what were they really making? This is a film about style vs. content, reality vs. observation, intention vs. perception and a supposed anti-aesthetic used by scientists to document a piece of our existence. - S.G.

Hostage, the Bachar Tapes

In the mid-1980s, Sonheil Bachar, a low-level Lebanese employee of the Kuwaiti Embassy in Beruit, spent 27 weeks of a much longer period of captivity, blindfolded and bound in a 10-x-12-foot room along with five Americans at the height of what was then called the “western hostage crisis.” In this part of the 53-tape series, shot and edited as if produced in a macabre collaboration between his captors and the media, Bachar, among other things, recounts his experience of the micro-politics of touch, revealing the white American heterosexual male body as another hostage in crisis. - S.A.

Surely the most controversial and sacreligious Greek film of recent years, Eva Stefani's Acropolis suggests a dialectical image of national identity as repressed, fetishised feminine body. Juxtaposing historic newsreel with plastic surgery footage and amateur Super 8 porn found in a flea market sprawled at the foot of the "sacred rock," Stefani eloquently detourns emblematic "official" memory to a history of collective fantasies, auto-erotic exploits and blind spots. – A.R.T.
